Universities and international accreditation: what is it and why is it important?

International accreditation is a process that assesses the quality of higher education and its ability to meet certain quality standards. This process is led by higher education accrediting organizations and focuses on assessing teaching, research, facilities and other aspects of the college.

National and international accreditation

National accreditation of a college is a process that assesses the quality of a college in a particular country. This process is carried out by national higher education accreditation organisations and focuses on the quality of teaching and research at a particular school.

International college accreditation is a similar process, but it is for colleges abroad and is conducted by an international higher education accreditation organisation. This process is aimed at assessing the quality of a college and its ability to meet certain international quality standards.

There are several differences between national and international accreditation of a college:

  • National accreditation applies only to colleges in a given country, while international accreditation applies to colleges around the world.

  • National accreditation is led by a national organization, while international accreditation is led by an international organization.

  • National accreditation focuses on the quality standards set by the country, while international accreditation focuses on international quality standards.

International accreditation institutions

Even among accreditation institutions, there are non-serious organisations that hide their unfair business activities behind a flashy name. These fraudulent accreditation organisations are exposed by, for example, the Accreditation, Certification and Management Association of Educational Organisations and Schools - ACMAEOS. In contrast, below are some verified national and international accreditation bodies that provide accreditation for higher education institutions:

  1. Czech Association of MBA Schools - CAMBAS

  2. International Council for Higher Education CHEA

  3. International Accreditation Council IAC

  4. International Council for Accreditation in Education INQAAHE

  5. International Council for Accreditation in Higher Education ENQA

  6. International Council for Accreditation in Higher Education QAHE

  7. A non-profit association that addresses accreditation, certification and membership in educational organizations and schools ACMAEOS

These institutions provide accreditation for institutions of higher education around the world and their accreditations are considered recognized and trusted. Colleges that receive accreditation from these institutions are considered to be of high quality and guarantee a high standard of education.

International accreditation body QAHE - International Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education. The aim of this accreditation is to provide a clear and understandable view of the quality of an institution of higher education and its ability to meet certain quality standards.

QAHE is recognised worldwide and can help a college to enhance its prestige and attractiveness to prospective students and employers and to find partners for international collaboration.

Why is gaining international accreditation so important? Some of the main benefits are listed below:

  • Recognition of educational quality: International accreditation provides recognition of the quality of a particular college's education and helps ensure that the college meets internationally recognised quality standards.

  • Higher prestige: Colleges with international accreditation are considered prestigious and are popular with students, employers and the professional community.

  • Ability to admit international students: Internationally accredited colleges can admit international students and provide them with the same level of education they would receive in their own country.

  • Support for quality improvement: International accreditation provides support for the college to improve the quality of education and to meet internationally recognised standards.

International accreditation is an important process for assessing the quality of higher education and can be an essential indicator of quality and credibility for universities. When selecting a college, it is also important to note the accreditation that a particular college holds. This can provide assurance that the investment in a particular education is actually worthwhile.
