What is it ECTS credit?
(European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System)
What does ECTS mean?
It is an assessment of a study subject according to its difficulty and scope
(e.g.: credit course can have 2-5 credits depending on the scope and difficulty) for the purpose
recognition and transfer of credits/subjects between individual schools.
This system is implemented throughout Europe in the academic field of university studies. The credit system is based on the Bologna Process where it is defined 1.-3. study cycle.
The system was created due to the possibility of studying at several schools or institutions on an international scale. That is, the credit you get from an internship or study at any school with ECTS credits can be recognized at a school where
you are studying primarily for your degree program.
ECTS credits are also recognized by non-European schools without major problems. As soon as the student completes his studies at the university, a "Diploma Supplement" is issued to his diploma - an addition to the diploma, where
a list of studied subjects with their ECTS is given.
How does the ECTS system work?
60 ECTS credits correspond to two semesters, i.e. one year of study.
In an academic year, these credits are usually divided into several smaller modules/subjects. Typical
"short-term qualification" includes 90-120 ECTS credits.
The "first cycle" (or bachelor's) program consists of either 180 or 240 ECTS credits. The use of the ECTS system supports the mobility of students between higher education institutions.
